job summary

The Chief Executive Officer has responsibility for the implementation of the Mathematical Association of Victoria's strategic plan. The Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the management of the Association, including recruitment and management of all staff, preparation and monitoring of all budgets for the Association, ensuring that all statutory regulations are fulfilled, and for the provision of support to Council members. High levels of organisational, administrative and written and oral communication skills are essential as the position involves working with a broad range of people: schools, universities, students, parents, and voluntary and paid staff.

specific duties

  • Assist council with the identification of strategic directions for the Association
  • Initiate and monitor the implementation of the Association's strategic plan
  • Manage all the operations of the Association, including:
  • Ensuring all financial requirements are met through preparation and monitoring of the Association's budget, and regular reporting to Council and its committees
  • Coordinating all staffing at the Association, including recruitment, staff reviews and management of all staffing issues
  • Advising Council on significant changes to staffing requirements
  • Coordinating the activities of the Association to ensure that there are sufficient resources and staff to deliver consistently excellent outcomes to members and stakeholders
  • Coordinating all maintenance and capital works for the Association, in consultation with Council/Executive
  • Coordinate the preparation of the Association's Annual Report
  • Represent the Association at MAV events where required
  • Be responsible to the Executive Committee for coordinating the day-to-day activity of the office and managing the operations of the Association.
  • Be responsible for timely and effective communications with elected Officers and Councillors regarding issues relating to their responsibilities.
  • Liaise with Councillors, Professional Officers and other representatives of the MAV to ensure appropriate responses to requests from related bodies, for example, the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, the Council of Professional Teacher Associations of Victoria (CPTAV), the Department of Education and Training (DE&T) and so on.
  • Organise appropriate support to the Secretary in the preparation of membership reports to Council and in the organisation of Council meetings and the Annual General Meeting.
  • Attend meetings of Management Committee and Council, and other committees as required.
  • Promote the association to major stakeholders and sponsors

MAV Mission

The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) is a membership driven association, which provides a voice, leadership and professional support for mathematical education.


The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) first met in July 1906. Its charter then, as it is today, was the development of mathematics and the mathematical sciences in Victoria through education, demonstration, promotion, support for research and cooperation with the great educational institutions of the age such as the University and the thirty-eight year old Education Department.

The Association has since developed over time into a large professional teacher association with over 1,600 institutional and individual members in schools in all systems across Victoria and provides a voice, leadership and professional support for mathematical education. 63% of members are based in Greater Melbourne, 37% in regional Victoria. 68% of members are based at State schools, 19% in the Catholic system and 13% from independent schools. 52% of members work at the primary school level, 46% at the secondary level with the remainder at TAFE and universities.

The MAV is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. A Council elected on an annual basis by members governs the MAV. The Council meets monthly and is advised by seven committees. The Councillors and a staff of seven work together to plan and deliver specific services to members, such as professional learning programs; publications; public lectures; student enrichment activities like VCE revision days, camps, games days and project based quests; an annual metropolitan conference attended by over 2,000 teachers; a regional conference attended by over 300 teachers; policy development and advice to members, Government and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority; and advocacy and information services. The staff includes an executive officer and two professional officers (one 0.6 EFT position, currently vacant for 2006 and one 0.8 EFT position) responsible for planning and delivery of specific services to members, such as professional development, publications, the Mathematics Talent Quest, conferences, policy development and advice, advocacy and information services. A finance officer and two administrative assistants make up the team. An events management business provides events management and coordination services to the MAV.

Over the past three years almost 9,000 teachers have participated in the many and varied mathematics and numeracy orientated professional learning programs offered across the State by the MAV and each year just on 17,000 students have participated in mathematics education activities arranged by the Association. The profile of these participants generally reflects the membership profile quoted above, that is, as an example, over 65% of all teachers and students participating in MAV activities and programs came from State schools.

In 2005 the Council devoted much voluntary time and effort to planning its program, activities and publications for the next three years. The MAV has made a firm commitment to support members through work built upon and based around the Victorian Governments Blueprint for Government Schools, particularly Flagship Strategy 1, Student Learning. Firstly, a Victorian Essential Learning Standards information and discussion paper was developed and published for members.

Secondly, in 2006 the MAV will work closely with schools, and clusters and networks of schools to ensure services are delivered and supported in a manner supportive of whole-school curriculum planning with a focus on improving pedagogy to meet the diverse needs of students in learning communities within and beyond the school and the collection and dissemination of good practice.

Whilst the activities of the Association are fully funded by membership and service sales, the Department of Education & Training currently supports the work of the Association through the Strategic Partnerships Program.
